From 10 am until 5 pm Sunday

$45 - $100 sliding scale (explanation below)

Fire is amazing. For millennia, humans all around the globe have gathered around fire to celebrate, eat, drink, tell stories, and sing songs. Fire lights the dark, warms our homes, cooks our food...and so much more. At EVE, we believe that fire craft - knowing how to safely create and use fire - is a fundamental human skill. And one of the most satisfying and magical elements of fire craft is creating fire "by friction" (in other words, rubbing sticks together).

This class - suitable for complete beginners - will give students a profoundly deeper understanding of numerous aspects of fire craft, with a focus on friction fire. During the class, you will:

  • Learn all about basic fire principles such as safety, site selection, fuel considerations, and how to build efficient fire structures.
  • Explore the two most universal fire-by-friction methods: the bow drill and hand drill.
  • Carve your very own bow drill kit - customized to fit your body size - from wood we provide.
  • Practice creating fire with the bow drill and hand drill, learning dozens of tips and tricks about form and technique in the process.
  • Benefit from one-on-one guidance from experienced instructors so that you can build good habits, correct errors, and accelerate your journey towards proficiency.

Creating fire by friction takes effort and persistence, but on average, over 75% of students successfully make fire by the end of this class! Plus, participants will take home three essential bow drill components (spindle, fireboard, hand hold) as well as the knowledge and skills to make complete bow and hand drill kits on their own.

If you've ever watched cast members of "survival" reality shows make fire primitively and thought to yourself, "I want to try that," or if you want to experience the magic of making fire by rubbing sticks together, or if you simply want to be more proficient with fire for campouts and backyard barbecues: this class is for you!

WHAT IS A SLIDING SCALE? In order to make our classes available to a broad and diverse audience, we use a sliding scale payment model, which means YOU CHOOSE how much to pay, within a given range. Paying lower in the scale is like receiving a scholarship. Paying higher in the scale helps cover the true cost of the class. You can pay MORE than the high end of the scale: this “extra donation” helps make our sliding scale possible. Thank you for considering your situation and resources carefully as you make your decision!
