Firekeepers Nature Camp

July 17 – 21, 9 AM – 3 PM, at The Hill School, Middleburg, Virginia

Calling all nature explorers and eco-artisans to band together and form a wilderness village! Join Earth Village Education and a Hill School science teacher for a fun and exciting week learning the ways of the Firekeeper. Firekeepers are the heart and soul of the tribe: they are skilled in all aspects of village building; they love cooking wild food over open flame; they delight in art, craft, story, and song. As a Firekeeper, you’ll construct forts and shelters, forage for wild edible plants, learn several ways to build and use fire (especially for cooking), create beautiful crafts and useful tools from materials we find in nature, play games, tell stories, and sing songs as we connect deeply to the land around us and learn to be at home in the woods.

  • Discover the stories of birds, animals, and plants. Hone your powers of perception and learn how to blend and move with nature.
  • Become a wild-tender of nature’s garden. Learn to identify, harvest, and prepare wild edible plants, and process medicinal plants to make your own “wild” first aid supplies.
  • Explore firecraft! Learn several ways to build fire, then harness the power of flame to cook tasty treats over the campfire.
  • Roam the landscape to gather leaves, nuts, branches, vines, seeds, and fruit. As a “nature artisan,” use these materials to create beautiful and useful items such as baskets, bowls, spoons, cordage, dye, and jewelry.
  • Play games, have fun, make friends, work as a team, and go home with cool stuff you made!

Woodsrunners Nature Camp

July 24 – 28, 9 AM – 3 PM at The Hill School, Middleburg, Virginia

Join Earth Village Education, a Hill School science teacher, and a group of adventurers journeying into the wildest places on and around the Hill School campus. If you dream of being a woods ninja or forest scout—Woodsrunner camp is for you! Woodsrunners are the eyes and ears of the tribe. Deeply connected to the land around them, they are masters of wilderness living skills, moving and blending with nature, and listening to what the wild things say. As a Woodsrunner you’ll practice camouflage and stalking techniques, learn various navigation skills, build and use fire, construct natural shelters, forage for wild edible plants, track humans and animals, solve riddles and mysteries of the natural world, play games, and get muddy and dirty sneaking around in the woods!

  • Expand your awareness and fine-tune your senses. Learn how to detect and identify birds, animals, and a variety of edible, useful, and poisonous plants.
  • Explore the art of navigation using maps, compasses, and primitive techniques.
  • Discover what to do if you’re lost in the woods.
  • Practice several different ways to build and maintain fire, including how to make fire by rubbing sticks together.
  • Get down and dirty tracking and trailing humans and animals. Learn “invisibility” techniques such as natural camouflage and stalking so you can travel across the landscape undetected.

At the end of the week, complete an epic scavenger hunt that will test all your Woodsrunner skills!
