After graduating from Houghton College in western New York state with a degree in Studio Art, Kevin pursued a diverse series of jobs centered around two of his passions: education and the outdoors. He worked as a whitewater rafting and canoeing guide in Texas, a nature center interpreter in Delaware, a summer camp program director in New York, a high school art teacher in North Carolina, an international trip leader in Thailand, and a wilderness instructor in Pennsylvania, Florida, Montana, South Carolina, Oregon, and Washington. Kevin loves expanding his horizons, so between jobs he sought out personal education, adventure, and travel opportunities. He attended Tom Brown’s Tracker School, maintained a Wilderness First Responder certification, kayaked class-III and -IV whitewater, took kiteboarding classes, and spent a year backpacking around Asia and New Zealand (in total, Kevin has visited 21 different countries). In his early thirties, Kevin and his sweetheart moved into a tiny off-grid cabin near Boone, North Carolina, as an experiment in simple, self-sufficient living. Their water came from a spring, their electricity from solar panels, and their heat from a woodstove. They gardened, raised and butchered animals, tended bees, and chopped lots of firewood. In his free time, Kevin continued to search out new and diverse hobbies, such as sewing his own clothes and playing the fiddle. He’s excited to be working for Earth Village Education, where his broad experiences with self-sufficient living, wilderness adventure, and education can all be utilized to advance the organization’s mission.
