Registering for a Class

How do I register for a class?
Online: Click on a class in our class schedule, then click the green “sign up” button at the bottom of the page. You’ll be taken to Eventbrite.com, our secure registration platform, to provide credit card information. That’s it!
Mail: Contact us if you must register by mail or pay by check.
Phone: Call our office at 703-828-7443 Monday to Friday between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. EST to register.

Do you have an age limit for your classes? At this time all the classes we are offering on our website are designed for adults, and all students must be at least 18 years old by the first day of class. There is no upper age limit for classes.

My child is/I am under 18, but I really want to attend a class — what can I do?
Our classes are geared toward adults. They contain a lot of information, sometimes periods of lecture and often the use of knives, saws and other sharp tools. Minors may attend and be registered with the accompaniment of a registered adult if the minor is able to fully participate in the class activities. If your child cannot participate fully in the class, we discourage their attendance so you may focus completely. This is safer for everyone as we value your experience and cannot offer any assistance in watching children.

How early can I sign up for a class? You can sign up for a class as soon as it appears on the schedule. Please keep in mind that once you have registered, if you are unable to attend the class for whatever reason, our Cancellation Policy will apply.

When is the latest that I can sign up for a class? We prefer that whenever possible you sign up a minimum of two weeks prior to the class start date. We base our supplies orders on the number of students enrolled at that time. If a class is not full two weeks prior to the start date enrollment will remain open.

Class Prices

WHAT IS A SLIDING SCALE? In order to make our classes available to a broad and diverse audience, we use a sliding scale payment model, which means YOU CHOOSE how much to pay, within a given range. Paying lower in the scale is like receiving a scholarship. Paying higher in the scale helps cover the complete course costs. You can pay MORE than the high end of the scale: this “extra donation” helps make our sliding scale possible. Thank you for considering your situation and resources carefully as you make your decision!

How much do I have to put down to reserve my space? At this time our registration platform, Eventbrite.com, is only set up to receive payment in full for all classes. If you would like to attend a multi-day class and need to split up the payments into smaller chunks (i.e., a deposit and then a final payment), please contact us

How do I pay for classes? You have many payment options for classes. We accept Visa, Master Card, American Express & Discover cards. Personal checks, money orders and travelers checks are accepted only when drawn on U.S. banks, in U.S. funds. Please make all checks and money orders payable to Earth Village Education. Cash is only accepted when registering in person at our office.

Do you offer scholarships?
At this time, EVE does not have any scholarship options however we hope to be able to offer this type of program in the future.

Do you offer group discounts?
We do! Please contact us for more information.

Attending a Class

Where will my class be held? Classes will be held either at our farm in Marshall, Virginia or other locations in the Northern Virginia area. Directions to the class location will be provided when you register.

Can I arrive early? If you are attending a one-day class please plan on arriving 10-15 minutes before the start time. If you’re attending a multi-day class, you may arrive the night before to pitch your tent. Please let us know if you plan on arriving early.

Where do I stay during my class? You may stay in our beautiful and secluded primitive campground on the farm with your own cozy tent, sleeping bag and pad!

What kind of meals do you provide? Do I need to bring my own food? We supply unlimited fresh fruit and beverages daily. We cannot legally cook for you at this time so for a one-day class please bring your lunch. For multi-day classes please bring your meals, camping-stove, and cooking supplies. There is a grocery store nearby. We can supply hot water and a covered space to cook in, as well as limited refrigerator space.

May I bring my pets? Sorry, NO pets are allowed.

If live nearby may I stay at my home during the class? Yes, but we encourage those participating in multi-day classes to stay onsite so they have the best possible experience!

Class Equipment

What knife/tent/clothing etc do you recommend for classes? For classes that require the use of a knife we recommend a fixed blade, non-serrated knife for class. If you want a recommendation please contact us! Please be sure to bring weather-appropriate clothing. If you are staying for a multi-day class please bring a tent and sleeping bag that is appropriate for a range of temperatures. It is important that your are comfortable during class.

What kind of equipment should I bring? Here is a complete What to Bring to Class list. This list will be emailed to you when you register.

What kind of weather should I expect? Current weather information, as well as month-by-month temperature and rainfall averages can be found at http://www.weather.com. Search for Marshall, Virginia

What kind clothing should I bring? Weather is rarely predictable, even in the middle of summer! Bring several changes of clothing and be prepared for all temperatures. Above all, be sure that you have appropriate rain gear for both you and your tent! Here is a What to Bring to Class list.

May I bring a video camera? No. Video recording is not permitted during classes. Thank you!

May I bring a camera? Yes! Photos are an excellent way to supplement your written notes from a class, especially if you are not artistically inclined. However, please keep in mind that video recording is NOT permitted during classes so if you have a digital camera that also shoots video, please restrict your usage to taking still photographs, not video.

Volunteer

I want to volunteer — how do I do that? If you want to volunteer your time we would love to have you! Occasionally we have volunteer days that are open to the public. Please check the schedule for volunteer days!

What does a volunteer do?  Volunteers are an integral part of helping us operate Overlook Farm. During volunteer days you can expect to do anything from weeding gardens to helping clear away invasive species. We love volunteers and always try to share what is in season from the garden as a thank you!
